Piano
Piano can be categorized into three types which are Grand, Vertical or upright and Electronic Keyboards which are available in different sizes and styles. Recently there have been more changes in musical instruments and more growth in demand for modern equipment in leading brands such as the Yamaha digital piano and widespread use of Yamaha and Casio keyboards.
The general rule of any type of piano is that the longer the strings are on the piano, the more resonant and full the sound will be produced; and also the higher the upright piano is, the better its sound. Here are the types of piano:
Grand Pianos:
Grand pianos are also known as horizontal Pianos, they usually produce better sound and due to the bigger mass of them dampers does not produce after-sound fluctuations. Grand pianos generate sound with less inharmonicity as they are bigger with longer bass strings. Grand pianos are usually free from any direct obstacle that’s why professional pianists play a grand piano because the sound quality is better. Though a grand piano is a large instrument, the longer strings are the reason for the improved sound in a grand piano.
There are 6 basic types of grand piano which are listed from small to the largest Petite Grand, Baby Grand, Medium Grand, Parlor Grand, Ballroom and Concert Grand.
Advantages of a grand Piano
• Dampers in grand pianos are more effective because they dampen the strings at the same places where the hammers excite them.
• Disposition of the soundboard is more rational in grand pianos as the sides of the soundboard are exposed to the room for extensive sound radiation.
• Grand piano will hold its value over time.
• The piano has natural acoustic sounds which is produced by the hammer striking the string
• Pianos are more responsive to key action due to the double escapement technique. The natural tones make the music more enjoyable.
• Grand pianos are bigger which allows their strings to be longer, and longer strings can vibrate more accurately and produce wider than the shorter string.
• If one way or the other a problem arises with the piano mechanically, it can be fixed by a piano tuner quite quickly and cheaply.
Disadvantages of Grand Pianos
• The grand piano usually weighs between 530 and 1100 lbs (240-500kg) which is extremely heavy which cannot be maneuver without seeking the help of piano movers.
• The volume of grand piano cannot be controlled, can’t be turned up or down, it is reliant on the player to control this.
• The piano needs tuning regularly usually twice a year, thus may be costly.
• The grand pianos take up a lot of space, and could be difficult to fit through a doorway.
• Regular maintenance is required for a grand piano
• A quality grand piano can be quite more expensive
• Grand pianos consume a lot of space, most especially the concert grand and boudoir.
Vertical or Upright Pianos
The Upright piano is the most common piano due to its affordability, compactness and warm sound. They are less expensive though depending on the model, but some can exceed grand pianos in its total value. Although uprights often are depicted as inferior to the grand pianos, a 5′ upright can rival a grand piano in terms of tone quality and loudness.
There are four types of vertical pianos, based on piano height: Spinet 35″-37″~58″, Console 38″-39″, Studio 40″-43″ ~58″, and Upright 45″-48″~58″.
Advantages of upright piano
• Your piano will hold its value over time and if it is looked after it will normally increase over a longer period (normally 20 years plus)
• The piano has natural acoustic sounds which is produced by the hammer striking the string and then amplified by the soundboard.
• Upright are smaller than a grand but larger than a keyboard.
• If the piano’s outer casing is damaged it can be repaired easily and quite cheaply.
• If a mechanical problem arises, it can normally be fixed by a piano tuner quite cheaply and faster.
Disadvantages of Upright Pianos
• The upright piano is quite heavy weigh 175kg upwards.
• Volume cannot be turned up or down, it’s reliant on the player to control this.
• You should tune the piano regularly usually twice a year.
• The piano needs regular maintenance.
• A good upright piano can be quite expensive compared to an electric piano
• Upright pianos are usually placed against a wall which consequently reflects the produced sound.
Electric Piano
Electric piano are great for beginners or moving performers, they are the most affordable, and although the quality is not like that of an acoustic, the sound improves for the high-end and mid-range instruments. NOTE:
After the comparing, you should note you can go for a grand piano if you have enough space and money. If you don’t want to over-kill then go for an upright piano. However, if you don’t have much money, buy a digital keyboard that is fully size and with weighted keys.
